Here's how Whitehouse.gov and the @POTUS Twitter handle are changingJust as Donald Trump was sworn into the highest office in the land at noon on the steps of the Capitol building, the Whitehouse.gov webpage rolled over from the one the Obama White House maintained for the past eight years to one the Trump team will take over. Obama’s speeches, briefings and executive actions have been removed, leaving a clean slate for Trump and his Cabinet to make their mark on. Interestingly a Google search for “Obama Whitehouse.gov” turned up a link for a website titled “President Barack Obama | whitehouse.gov,” though that’s likely a caching issue and should change over soon.

Chrissy Teigen’s Daughter Has the Cutest Wave — And Luna Has ‘No Idea’ Just How Adorable It Is

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

To see the world through the eyes of a child means even the simplest acts are wonderful, and Chrissy Teigen can agree.

The mother of one gushed about her daughter Luna in a cute video she tweeted of the 9-month-old crawling around and waving to the camera.

“My beautiful has no idea,” Teigen, 31, captioned the clip.

With her wave down, Luna, who was born in April, has another fine motor skill to add to her repertoire as she previously nailed her clapping.

The Lip Sync Battle star and husband John Legend often chronicle their little girl’s milestone moments, and Luna’s already loving being in front of a camera.

Most recently, Legend, 38, shared a portrait of Lulu adorably smiling and posing on a furry chair.

We have a feeling Chrissy’s got another model in the family!

Project Selects Next Edition of Next in Class Designers

Project has selected the two emerging designers who will be showcased at its New York trade show next week.
Madison Li and Molly Kirchoff have been chosen to exhibit as part of the show’s Next in Class section. The initiative kicked off in July and is part of the trade show’s partnership with The New School’s Parsons School of Design.

Jaclyn Hill and Morphe Brushes Partner On a Forthcoming Palette

THE KINGMAKER COMETH: Jaclyn Hill, the influencer who beauty brand Becca Cosmetics rode to a deal with Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., has whipped up another collaboration. On social media Friday, she revealed she’s been working on a palette with Morphe Brushes, a sequel to a palette she released with the brand in 2014. In an Instagram post, Hill said, “[Morphe creative director and cofounder] Linda [Tawil] gave me complete control and I was so picky with the pigmentation, application and blend-ability. Our goal was to create something high quality with an affordable price. After two years we feel we mastered it.” The palette launches in March.
Morphe has harnessed the power of social media to build a brand far beyond its store in Burbank, Calif., and its core competency in makeup brushes. The first palette it created with Hill sold out within 24 hours. Morphe has also teamed up with the social-media personality known as Kathleen Lights on a palette, and makeup brand founder and influencer Jeffree Star on a brush set. The marketing technology firm Tribe Dynamics has tracked the ascension of Morphe on social media and, in November of last year, found its earned media value across various digital platforms jumped

Givenchy Men’s Fall 2017

Riccardo Tisci’s show for Givenchy started off on a solemn note, with a minute of silence for Franca Sozzani, the Italian Vogue editor in chief who died in December. It’s hard to imagine a typical Tisci show segueing on from such a reflective moment, but this wasn’t a typical Tisci show.
No earsplitting soundtrack. No car wreck set. (The venue, the recently renovated National Library of France, could not have been more sedate.) And not a hint of gangsta attitude.
Instead, Tisci delivered what he described as an ode to the American West, as seen through the eyes of a child. “I did it my own way: graphic and pop and much more ironic and fun, which is what I see a future for — things that are more positive and more light,” he said backstage after the show. “It’s the child in me that never grew up.”
The display opened with a series of navy jackets and coats featuring oversize brown buttons that threw the garments’ classic proportions off-balance. Ditto the extra-large multicolored toggles on a dark duffle coat, which had the effect of shrinking the wearer.
The majority of the lineup centered around checked shirts and graphic sweaters, with most of the action

Ivanka Trump Turns to Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera for the Inaugural Weekend’s Big Events

ALL-AMERICAN STYLE: For Friday’s two big inaugural events, Ivanka Trump turned to Oscar de la Renta’s Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia for an outfit for her father’s swearing-in ceremony in the morning and she donned a Carolina Herrera champagne-colored embellished gown for the inaugural balls.
The Oscar de la Renta designers saw to it that Ivanka Trump hit just the right notes for three key events during the weekend. For Thursday’s wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, the entrepreneur wore a kelly green wool cashgora coat with matching crepe dress. Thursday night’s candlelight ball in Union Station was another occasion for her to wear the New York label – this time it was an ivory crepe gown with black velvet corset bow. The Oscar de la Renta trifecta was completed at Friday’s swearing-in ceremony, where the first daughter donned an ivory cashgora wool jacket with stretch cady pants. Trump must really be a fan of the brand, having also turned to the design duo to dress her three children – Arabella, Joseph and Theodore Kushner – for the actual inauguration.
Her sister Tiffany seemed to follow her lead for outerwear, choosing a white double-breasted one albeit from Taoray Wang, a Chinese fashion

Keith Olbermann Says ‘We Were Invaded’ By Russia During The Election

Keith Olbermann has likened Russian efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election to help Donald Trump into power to an actual invasion.

“We were invaded, is what it boils down to,” GQ’s special correspondent said on Friday’s broadcast of “Real Time with Bill Maher.

The fact that “there was not blood on the streets” didn’t alter the fact, the former MSNBC and ESPN journalist added.

If the Russians had come in with Cossacks and put him in, I think we would have had a different kind of reaction to it,” he said. “That’s the reaction we need now.”

Ten Simple and Unexpected Ways to Boost Happiness

What are some small ways to boost happiness in everyday life? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Raj Raghunathan, Professor of marketing and happiness expert at UT Austin, on Quora:

I once surveyed my students to make a list of three small things that make them feel happy after watching this video. Here’s the Top Ten list from that survey:

Note that not all of them will work equally well for you, so you need to figure out which ones work best:

1. Engage in vigorous physical activity.

The next time you need a mood-boost, try this out: go for a long run or play a game of basketball. Now, what counts as a long run for you may be a mere walk in the park for me (it’s more likely to be the reverse), but the point is that the activity needs to be vigorous enough get your heart pumping and your mind distracted from your negative ruminations. If you are like most people, you are unlikely to want to get off your butt if you are feeling down. But, as the Nike slogan says, “Just Do It!” Here’s a fact to get you going: you are guaranteed to feel better after a workout than you felt before it.

2. Hang out with friends.

When we feel down, we typically don’t want to interact with others. This is partly because we don’t want others to see our negative side, but it’s mostly because we don’t think that hanging out with others is really going to help us feel better. I’m not sure where this intuition comes from, but I can tell you that it is wrong: our mood reliably improves after we socialize, especially if the people with whom we socialize are happy and likeable. Similar to how it’s important to overcome the reluctance to exercise, it’s important to overcome the pessimism we feel about the effectiveness of socializing when feeling down.

If you are wondering where and with whom to socialize, just call one of the “favorites” on your smart phone and make a plan to meet. Tell them about what is troubling you to get you started–even a short chat with a close-friend can significantly improve your mood.

3. Consume a moderate amount of alcohol.

I know, I know, I shouldn’t be encouraging people to drink, but what to do? It turns out that when we desperately need a happiness quick-fix, consuming a moderate amount of alcohol can be effective. The key here is to consume just enough to feel a little relaxed. The very process by which alcohol lowers inhibitions can also lower the tendency to worry. In other words, alcohol can temporarily take your mind off things that are causing you to feel negative and thus, can be useful in situations in which our mind is on a “negativity overdrive.” Needless to say, it is important to consume only a moderate amount of alcohol. If you are one of those who can’t stop after two, don’t try this at home or elsewhere!

4. Dress to kill.

As I mentioned in an earlier article, human beings are highly social creatures, which means that we worry a lot about what others think of us. When we believe that others view us positively, we feel good, and when we believe that they view us negatively, we feel bad. So, one way to make yourself feel good is to wear your best clothes and perfume (or cologne, as the case may be) and venture out to your local park or mall. We you look and smell good, or think that you do, you are likely to believe that others view you positively and this will make you feel good.

5. Revisit old (and positive) memories.

Reliving the “good old times” can be a surprisingly effective mood-booster. I say “surprising” because many of us, especially the young among us, rarely engage in reliving fond memories. Curiously, it seems that the more our life has become virtual, the less we are likely to revisit the past. My parents, for example, regularly spend time recalling pleasant past memories, and also routinely pore over the “family album” to relive past memories. Our existence in the virtual world, e.g., on social media websites, should, if anything, allow us to revisit our past even more effectively, given that many of our cherished memories and experiences are merely a “click away”.

A note of caution, however, if you are looking to the Internet to revisit the past: stay away from those who make you feel inferior. That is, stay away from people who are into the game of “keeping up with the joneses”–you know, the ones who frequently post pictures from their vacation in Spain, or engage in name-dropping. Findings show that such “friends” bring you down.

6. Watch a funny or touching video.

Some people prefer funny videos and others prefer heart-warming ones. Regardless, findings show is that even a short exposure to a positive video can significantly boost happiness. (There’s a reason why one of the most popular ways to manipulate mood in experiments is to have participants watch a video.) Here are links to two funny and two touching videos. (Note: the last one is relatively long, at about 15 minutes, but it is well worth it!)

Funny videos:

Dog playing piano: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=…

The Duck Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=…

Heart-warming videos:

Love Language: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=…

7. Talk to an older relative.

It’s a bit of a pity that, in many “new” cultures (like the US), the elderly aren’t as respected as they are older cultures (like China or India). Think about it: as you grow older, you get physically weak and mentally less nimble. The one saving grace could have been that you gain in respect. Without it, growing old seems to have no positives. No wonder the US is so “youth crazy”!

As findings on hyperopia show, the elderly do deserve our respect because they have “been there, done that.” They thus have many valuable lessons to share. In particular, no one can put things in perspective like the elderly can. Talking to them will help you discern the important from the merely urgent and will also help you not sweat the small stuff.

8. Tick something off your “to do” list.

Have you ever written down something on your things to do list just so that you can have the pleasure of scratching it out? Well, turns out you are not alone. Findings show that people derive an “efficacy boost” by accomplishing goals and this can, in turn, make them feel good. If you don’t have a things to do list or can’t think of something to write on it to scratch off, don’t worry. Just do something simple and easy, like depositing a check or washing a cup, and you’ll be on your way to feeling good.

9. Do a small act of kindness.

Perhaps the most powerful determinant of how we feel is the story we tell ourselves about who we are. The more we believe that we are efficacious and successful, the better we feel–which is why tip #8 (ticking something off your list) works. Another story you can tell yourself is that a large-hearted, generous person. One way to convince yourself of this story is to act like a large-hearted and generous person. This doesn’t mean that you break your bank to serve someone; all you need to do is to perform a small act of kindness such as, rescuing a kitten from a tree, or giving left-over food to a homeless person. Even merely smiling or saying “good morning!” to someone can pick your mood up.

10. Venture into nature.

Most urbanites don’t recognize it, but human beings are biophiles, that is, we love being out in nature. I take my MBA students on a two day retreat each year to a place out in the boonies. We hike up a hill and swim in the river and do various other “nature-oriented” things. Before going on the trip, most of my students are skeptical that being out in nature is going to do anything good, but many come away making a pledge that they will get out more in nature in the future. (I’m not sure if they actually make good on their pledge, but the pledge is good enough for me.) Turns out you don’t need to go on a two day retreat to reap the benefits of being out in nature: even a short hike or a picnic in a park can help you feel good.

Jimmy Kimmel Vows To Grab ‘Pumpkin’ President Donald Trump ‘By The Guts’ For The Next 4 Years

Jimmy Kimmel has shared his plan of action for Donald Trump’s presidency.

The late night host said that since Trump was now president, people were asking if he would “continue to make fun of the most powerful man on earth.”

“And the answer is ‘yeah, of course,’” he revealed Friday.

“I’ve not had it easy, for the last eight years I’ve been forced to make jokes about the First Lady’s vegetable garden,” said Kimmel. “You think I’m not going to grab this pumpkin by the guts and shake it until the seeds pop out? You’re damn right I am.”

Watching Al Gore’s New Climate Change Doc Before Trump’s Inauguration Was Eerie

When I first realized Donald Trump’s inauguration would occur on the second day of the Sundance Film Festival, I felt relief. Instead of being glued to the inevitable Twitter meltdown as our nation plunges into an alarming new era, I could embrace toasty theaters at an event where art prevails. Phew.

Upon arriving in snowy Park City on Thursday, the rose-color glasses I’d donned felt a bit more pallid. Reality had sunk in, and suddenly I wondered whether it was even appropriate to spend the weekend seeing movies while a new political order emerges in real time. Then I sat down for my first screening, “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,” and those glasses lost their focus altogether.

“An Inconvenient Sequel” is Al Gore’s follow-up to “An Inconvenient Truth,” the Oscar-winning documentary that in 2006 electrified the debate surrounding climate change. “Truth,” a showcase for Gore’s PowerPoint lectures about the horrors of global warming, was an exercise in apprehension. “Fix this now, or we are doomed,” the movie screamed. Many, thankfully, listened. So many, in fact, that “An Inconvenient Sequel” is brimming with hope, sort of.

Now, listen. I’m a movie journalist. I can’t pretend to write this as a climate-change sage of any kind. But, as science-y as these documentaries are, they are surprisingly easy to understand, especially in tone. (Credit this time around is owed to directors Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk, whose film reveals more about Gore than Davis Guggenheim managed in “An Inconvenient Truth.”) Yes, weather-related catastrophes have continued at frightening rates; just look at the recent floodings in Florida and Louisiana, or the shrinking Manhattan coastline predicted in “Truth.” But the sequel praises the world’s remarkable strides over the past 11 years, chiefly 2015’s United Nations conference in Paris, which resulted in a wide-ranging agreement to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and prevent Earth’s temperatures from continuing to rise.

A sense of achievement pervades the movie ― and then, right as promise for the health of our planet swells, Trump gets elected. In the final scene, Gore sits at his laptop, watching the president-elect call climate change an “expensive hoax” and vow to withdraw from the Paris accord

When I checked my phone after “An Inconvenient Sequel” ended, another New York Times push notification about Trump’s links to Russian president Vladimir Putin had come though. More of the same. The next morning, after the former reality TV star was inaugurated, Twitter informed me that the Obama administration’s climate-change page had been removed from the White House website.

Suddenly the outcomes Gore and his allies had effected seemed lost to what we call the “transition of power.” What a way to begin Sundance, usually a joyful occasion about celebrating creativity.

At Thursday night’s premiere of the aptly titled Netflix dark comedy “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” Park City mayor Jack Thomas spoke of his town’s own efforts to combat climate change. Watching Thomas speak, it was hard to believe so much of the world beyond this little festival bubble would aggressively protest.

On Friday morning, as journalists poured out of a press screening of “The Incredible Jessica James,” talk turned to Trump. I congregated outside the theater with a cabal of journalists, many of whom adored the movie (myself included), particularly because it offered comforting counter-programming to the inaugural speech we’d just avoided.

Starring Jessica Williams, “Jessica James” borrows familiar post-breakup romantic-comedy beats, but its voice is distinctly modern. Fictional Jessica is an aspiring New York playwright with a progressive worldview that implicitly opposes much of Trump’s rhetoric. At her younger sister’s baby shower, for example, the titular marriage-averse millennial gifts a self-illustrated picture book called Subverting the ABCs of the Patriarchal Paradigm.

The movie provided a charming 85-minute reminder of the inclusive landscape we assume Hillary Clinton’s presidency would have fostered. And then, as we stragglers went our separate ways, it was back to reality. The bubble had burst. Trump was our president. (Jessica Williams 2020.)

Less than 24 hours after the festival’s start, Sundance is in a weird mood. Yet, just like most of this fearful country, those of us in Park City must decide how to move forward. In “An Inconvenient Sequel,” Gore recalls having to do the same when the Supreme Court decided George W. Bush would be our president, and look how much progress Gore encouraged in the years since. If there’s relief from the chaos in these Utah mountains, maybe that’s OK.

“An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power” opens in theaters June 28. “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore” hits Netflix on Feb. 24. “The Incredible Jessica James” is hoping to secure theatrical distribution at Sundance.

Melania Trump Wears A White Off-The-Shoulder Gown To The Inaugural Ball

First lady Melania Trump made her debut at the inaugural ball Friday night, and as expected, stayed true to her classic style.

After drawing comparisons to Jackie Kennedy in the sky blue Ralph Lauren outfit she wore for her husband’s inauguration earlier in the day, Trump’s evening look was a white, off-the-shoulder gown by Carolina Herrera’s former creative director Hervé Pierre, which features a structured detail down the front, a thigh-high slit and a red belt.

The look is a bit more toned down than Ivanka’s, who wore a sparkly Carolina Herrera gown for the occasion.

Wearing her hair down, she paired the look with minimal accessories. Earlier reports predicted that Ralph Lauren and Karl Lagerfeld would dress her for various inaugural events, but WWD has since confirmed that she in fact collaborated with Pierre on the look.

Stephen Colbert Begins The Donald Trump Era With A Yuuuge New Look

Stephen Colbert switched up his outfit in honor of new President Donald Trump on Friday.

After poking fun at the super long red tie that Trump wore during his inauguration, “The Late Show” host paid tribute by revealing his own yellow version.

Colbert also predicted that the extended necktie may now become all the rage, claiming that whatever the president wears at the inaugural “tends to set the fashion trend for men for the next four years.”

“It’s very handy,” Colbert commented on his new tie. “You can use it for all sorts of things, for hiding an erection for instance, which I will not have for four years now.”

Murder and Mayhem

Murder and Mayhem

Dead women tell no tales. Former cat burglar Rook Stevens stole many a priceless thing in the past, but he’s never been accused of taking a life-until now. It was one thing to find a former associate inside Potter’s Field, his pop culture memorabilia shop, but quite another to stumble across her dead body. Detective Dante Montoya thought he’d never see Rook Stevens again-not after his former partner falsified evidence to entrap the jewelry thief and Stevens walked off scot-free. So when he tackled a fleeing murder suspect, Dante was shocked to discover the blood-covered man was none other than the thief he’d fought to put in prison and who still makes his blood sing. Rook is determined to shake loose the murder charge against him, even if it means putting distance between him and the rugged Cuban-Mexican detective who brought him down. If one dead con artist wasn’t bad enough, others soon follow, and as the bodies pile up around Rook’s feet, he’s forced to reach out to the last man he’d expect to believe in his innocence-and the only man who’s ever gotten under Rook’s skin.

Downhome Gospel

Downhome Gospel

Jerrilyn McGregory explores sacred music and spiritual activism in a little-known region of the South, the Wiregrass Country of Georgia, Alabama, and North Florida. She examines African American sacred music outside of Sunday church-related activities, showing that singing conventions and anniversary programs fortify spiritual as well as social needs. In this region African Americans maintain a social world of their own creation. Their cultural performances embrace some of the most pervasive forms of African American sacred music-spirituals, common meter, Sacred Harp, shape-note, traditional, and contemporary gospel. Moreover, the contexts in which they sing include present-day observations such as the Twentieth of May (Emancipation Day), Burial League Turnouts, and Fifth Sunday. Rather than tracing the evolution of African American sacred music, this ethnographic study focuses on contemporary cultural performances, almost all by women, which embrace all forms. These women promote a female-centered theology to ensure the survival of their communities and personal networks. They function in leadership roles that withstand the test of time. Their spiritual activism presents itself as a way of life. In Wiregrass Country, “You don’t have to sing like an angel” is a frequently expressed sentiment. To these women, “good” music is God’s music regardless of the manner delivered. Therefore, Downhome Gospel presents gospel music as being more than a transcendent sound. It is local spiritual activism that is writ large. Gospel means joy, hope, expectation, and the good news that makes the soul glad.

Intercultural Marriage

Intercultural Marriage

Today we live in a world without borders, a global village. Distance no longer defines who we meet, fall in love with or marry. The Internet and e-mail connect people around the world in seconds. Immigration, study abroad, travel and multinational business have created a thriving cross-cultural community. But the experiences shared across cultures and countries do not always bridge the fundamental differences in beliefs and behaviors that span diverse cultures. In Intercultural Marriage, Dugan Romano delivers a? reality check? for anyone already in, or contemplating, an intercultural marriage. This insightful book interweaves lessons learned from others and suggests that the joys of an intercultural marriage often result from turning the challenges of crossing cultures into an opportunity for a fulfilling and lasting relationship. Now in its third edition, Intercultural Marriage examines the impact of cultural differences in marriage and offers practical guidelines on how to deal with the complexities they bring to a partnership. Covering such topics as raising bicultural children, religion, values, male vs. female roles, sex and social class, Romano continues to give voice to hundreds of couples she has interviewed and followed for over a decade.

Andersen’s Fairy Tales

Andersen’s Fairy Tales

Hans Christian Andersen often referred to in Scandinavia as H.C. Andersen; was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen’s popularity is not limited to children; his stories, called eventyr in Danish or “fairy-tales” in English, express themes that transcend age and nationality. Andersen’s fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West’s collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well.[2] Some of his most famous fairy tales include “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, “The Little Mermaid”, “The Nightingale”, “The Snow Queen”, “The Ugly Duckling”, and many more. His stories have inspired ballets, both animated and live-action films, and plays.

Hitman Gets HDR Support at the End of This Month

Io Interactive has confirmed today that the first season of Hitman will support High Dynamic Range (HDR) from January 31, 2017.

The update will coincide with the launch of the retail disc version of the 2016 stealth ’em up.

“As an example, think of 47 in a dark room looking out a bright window,” explains Io programmer Anders Wang Kristensen. “Without HDR you would not be able make out what’s outside, whereas with HDR you can simultaneously see details inside the room and outside the window.”

“Another extreme example is the sun. Without HDR we could not render the sun brighter than a white piece of paper, so we had to ‘simulate’ the sun being blinding. With HDR we can draw the sun several times brighter, so that it is actually close to being blinding, just like in real life.”

Oculus could cost Facebook up to $ 11 billion, but it might be worth itIn 2014, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent $ 2 billion to purchase the virtual reality startup Oculus and its Rift headset. Nearly three years later, though, it looks like that $ 2 billion was just a down payment for the VR company, as Facebook will likely have to shell out billions more until the social network can get the Oculus’ technology to a point where Zuckerberg and co. are satisfied.

Ivanka Trump Says She and ‘Very Good Friend’ Chelsea Clinton Haven’t Spoken Yet Since Blistering 2016 Campaign

A Trump and a Clinton can be friends.

Despite their parents Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton‘s blistering 2016 presidential campaigns, future First Daughter Ivanka Trump and former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton remain on good terms.

In her interview with 20/20, which aired Thursday evening, 35-year-old Ivanka called 36-year-old Chelsea a “very good friend.”

“She’s been a friend of mine long before the campaign, of course will be a friend of mine after,” the mother of three told ABC News’ Doris Roberts. “I haven’t spoken about the specific challenges about this next chapter with her just yet but I intend to.”

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

PEOPLE previously confirmed that Hillary and Bill Clinton will attend Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

Throughout the election cycle, Ivanka and Chelsea’s friendship was closely watched, and often compared to their parents’ bitter rivalry.

At the second 2016 presidential debate, the daughters met face-to-face and the two shared an affectionate exchange. And months before in July, Ivanka told PEOPLE, “We’re both incredibly supportive of our parents, as we should be. But we also continue to have great respect for one another.”

Chelsea had similar sentiments, telling PEOPLE in September 2015, “Friendship is always more important than politics. I learned that growing up, watching my parents be friends with people across the political spectrum in Arkansas.”

Reem Acra Outfits Melania Trump for D.C. Dinner

Designer Reem Acra got the nod from Melania Trump for tonight’s candlelight dinner at Union Station in Washington.
“The First Lady-elect is wearing the renowned international designer, Reem Acra, to celebrate the 58th presidential inauguration at a candlelight dinner with her husband, President-elect Donald J. Martine Rose X Napapjiri Fall 2017

London men’s wear designer Martine Rose has designed a capsule collection for Napapjiri, adding a contemporary spin to the Italian outerwear brand’s anoraks, rain jackets, and fleeces.
The updated details and blown-out proportions in Rose’s design added wearability and fresh streetwear appeal to the line while maintaining Napapjiri’s signatures.
Rose’s reinterpretation of the bramd’s Skidoo anorak for fall 2017 sees its narrow column traded in for an oversized silhouette–keeping the option to cinch up the midsection–while zippered shoulders make the sleeves detachable. Simple geometric appliqués matching the jacket’s color replace the old sponsorship patches. The Napapjiri logo patch across the chest is also rendered in monochrome.
Rose put the brand’s insulated rain shells to use for zip-front jackets instead of the usual half-zip pullovers. The capsule collection in black, yellow, cobalt and white also includes hoodies and baggy overalls made from Napapjiri’s Curly fleece.
“It was a pleasure to be given the opportunity to incorporate, modify and update iconic pieces,” Rose said in a statement. “I strived to keep Napapijri’s DNA recognizable in the collection.”
The designer said she was inspired by the fusion of high fashion and streetwear in the Nineties, and the way urban youth reinterpreted runway looks to make them their own.
The collection was presented at a reception Thursday in a showroom by Italian streetwear distributor

Brexit Vote Continues to Boost Foreign Spending in U.K.

POSITIVE START: Global Blue, the tax-free shopping agency, has released its latest international tax-free spend figures for December 2016, which highlight a continuous growth pattern in tourist spending following June’s Brexit vote.
International tourist spend increased by 23 percent in the month of December, boosting the year’s total spend to double-digit growth. Overall spend in 2016 rose by 14 percent, as opposed to 2 percent in 2015 and a downturn in 2014.
The boost in the British market comes as a direct result of the weak pound post-Brexit, with tourists wanting to make the most of the favorable exchange rates, particularly during the holiday period.
“Although the U.K. has always been a top destination for global travelers, historically our strong currency has been a barrier for many with a desire to visit. The weakened pound has extended the opportunity to a wider group of travelers,” said Gordon Clark, Global Blue managing director for the U.K. and Ireland.
American and Chinese tourists accounted for the majority of the growth, according to Global Blue. In December 2016, shoppers from China, who represent the highest-spending foreign market in the U.K., spent 46 percent more than the previous year, while spending by American visitors went up by 77

How to Lower Your Cholesterol with French Gourmet Food

How to Lower Your Cholesterol with French Gourmet Food

In this day and age when we see so much obesity, caused by the convenience foods found in the supermarkets and the fast food outlets, I think this book should be a must for every youngster (start young, maybe they will see the light). Chef Alain Braux shows us that even things we thought were ok, aren’t, if they are overcooked or micro waved, or even hard boiled eggs. Soft boiled eggs are better for you and your digestion. Simple little things that are so easy to adjust in our daily lives. This book is fun to read while it is showing us the pitfalls and how to chose food. Buying locally produced fresh meat and vegetables, and organic and humanely raised (for me). People are now becoming aware of all the junk and hormones pumped into food to produce “bigger and better looking”. Go for the locally grown misshapen tomato or apple that has had no pesticides sprayed on it. I really believe this book should be read by school and college students, to make them aware of what they are doing to their bodies. Chef Alain Braux shows us how we can make delicious appetizing meals that fulfill and do not leave us hungry and in need of a snack half an hour later” – Anna Murray “A reference book, a meal planning resource, and a cook book – all under one roof. With a friendly and charming writing style, Alain Braux delivers what North America’s cooks, restaurants, and school cafeterias *should* be delivering, but don’t: a completely healthy and tasty alternative to our overweight culture. His research is in-depth and thorough. His presentation style makes it is easy to absorb, even for this dude. I enjoy the meal suggestions, and weekly planning guide… it takes the theory to a very practical level we can all use. Did you know that there are now more people in the world croaking from diseases caused by obesity than by starvation? Alain is in the front lines of those doing battle for the health of the world. A definite must-have for anyone who loves cooking, and needs a nudge

Now is the Time: Do the Next, Right Thing

We will make only one choice.

Throughout our lives, we do only one thing. Again and again, moment by moment, year after year. It is how we live our days, how we shape our lives.

Our choice is this: What is the next, right thing for us to do? Where, in this moment, will we place our time, our care, our attention? Do we remain as we are, do we move? do we speak or keep silent, attend to this person, or that task, or turn away, in this direction, or that?

Each new moment demands a fresh choice.

after every decision, there is yet another to be made. And another. Ours are not so often obviously dramatic choices. We are rarely called upon to know the time to change careers, the day to get married, the hour to leave the city of our birth. Most choices are small, quiet, intimate things that flow from us as a breath, as water exhaled from a mountain spring. Endless, simple, one by one thimbles of water tumble into the next, creating the smallest trickles playing this way and that. Still. Over time, with neither map nor plan – through surprising twists, curving around unforeseen obstacles-mere droplets of water will always invariably find their way down, down, through the valley, completing their pilgrimage at last to become one, an ancient and familiar melting, into the sea, from which it came.

At every point of resistance, any threat of change, our tiny stream makes a choice: To go right or left? Over or around? Or it may just stop, right where it is. Without moving, our stream becomes a shallow pool, creates a slowly growing fullness, waiting. Waiting for that singularly perfect moment when the only possible next thing is to spill itself out and over, stumbling and rushing everywhere along its way.

The stream knows nothing of what lies ahead. It is not conscious of planning for any possible future. It is simply following the path of least resistance, motivated by gravity. Still, how does the water “decide” to go right, or left, when approaching a boulder, a fallen tree? And yet, a choice is made. Inch by inch, the water does the next, right thing, perhaps encountering tiny rivulets or flowing creeks along the way. By the end of the journey, if we look back, we witness the gradual, evolving birth of what we now realize has, drop by drop, choice by choice, become a stream.

A stream is little more than an ongoing fidelity, a consecrated relationship. A never-ending conversation between water, gravity, earth, overcoming obstacles, in a relationship born over time, which gives birth to this astonishing miracle we then call, “stream.” This ancient, elemental rhythm between water and earth creates all the streams that saturate all the seas that cover all the world.

So it is with our lives. The only choice we ever make is one called out from us by a similarly vital inner gravity, an invisible thread that carries our life forward, until our life – this one wild and precious life, meets the world. In all its wonder and promise, in all its ferocity and confusion. Just as it is.

So. We must prepare. We will make choices. If fortune smiles upon us we will make good, honorable, strong choices. But every decision we make, no matter how small, shapes the ground of our being. Each choice helps form the foundation upon which we stand, and live, and act.

This is our field of battle: Here, who we are meets what is in the world. This essential, heroic relationship, this intimate communion between the quiet wisdom of our hearts, and the ways the world emerges, moment by moment, right before our eyes becomes our most reliable tool, our most potent weapon, our true north, a lifelong practice of deep and holy listening for that very next, right thing we will – make no mistake – absolutely, and sooner than we imagine, be required to choose.

Our lives hang in the balance. Surely, goodness and mercy will follow us all.

Stephen Colbert Brings Back ‘Colbert Report’ Alter Ego For Obama Send-Off

Stephen Colbert is back!

The CBS “Late Show” host resurrected his conservative alter-ego from Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report” on Thursday night to bid goodbye to his longtime nemesis, President Barack Obama. Or rather ― for legal reasons ― he brought back the host’s “identical twin cousin.”

With his sword, Captain America shield and cocked eyebrow, Colbert launched into an old “Report” segment, Werd, to give the president a hilarious and surprisingly emotional farewell.

Check it out above.

From the Front Lines to Fashion’s Front Row: Photojournalist Guy Martin at Pitti Uomo

“I don’t want to be defined by it, by that thing.” Those wise words belong to photojournalist Guy Martin, when talking about the 2011 attack in Libya which injured him along with one other photographer, and left both Chris Hondros and documentarian Tim Hetherington dead. In a society that loves to place labels on people, for their achievements but most often for their misfortunes and mistakes, Martin is a perfect example of why such simplistic definitions are just plain wrong.

We are, and we become who we will be by constantly reshuffling and adding up all of our life experiences — the good and the bad, the brave and the scary, the deaths and the births. British-born and Middle East expert documentarian Guy Martin represents a wonderful specimen of the possibilities of humanity’s resilience, and grace under fire.

But, get this, I didn’t meet Martin on the embattled streets of Aleppo, or under siege in Misrata, or even in Tahrir Square during the Arab Spring. I meet the young, handsome and wise beyond his years photographer instead with his assistant for the day Louis, at Pitti Uomo, a fashion fair — during a break in the press office. Martin is in Florence to document Pitti Uomo through his lens, as part of a collaboration between Fondazione Pitti Immagine Discovery and nineteensixtyeight, a curated platform dedicated to the discussion and dissemination of modern photography.

Yes, granted, our initial meeting is inside the Fortezza da Basso, a fortified military building erected in the 1500s by the Medici family in the middle of Florence, to induce fear in their opponents who had ousted the family years before. But that is as far as the war references go. Or is it?

Does a fashion event echo some of the same stances and emotions as a war zone?

According to Martin, perhaps. He explains, “I think there are many kinds of similarities between doing something on the chaos of covering conflict to the chaos of two or three wardrobe changes backstage. At the end of the day, the things I look for are very human experiences so it doesn’t matter if that experience is chaos backstage of a fashion show or the chaos of hanging with rebels and fighters who are getting ready to go out and fight a battle for the day. It’s the same kind of mannerisms, it’s the same body movements, so as an observer of the human experience, I’m looking for those gestures and that body language that translate from a fashion show, to the street to more social documentary work, which is where I come from.”

Explaining further why he doesn’t like to be placed into the convenient little box labelled “war photographer” Martin admits, “I’ve never actually called myself a “war photographer” because I think that narrows my skill and I don’t want to be defined by that. When I am grey and old and I look back and it was only pictures of war and conflict, I think that would just be a really dangerous place to be. I love life in all of its things. There are plenty of old, injured war photographers who still go on talking about the old war stories and kind of live off that and that isn’t me. I just couldn’t do that.”

I tread lightly when it comes to speaking about Hetherington, because I know from personal experience that PTSD is the one aspect of an accident that never really goes away, and the slightest hint, the smallest mention can bring out a flood of emotions. Of course, I want to get to know Martin, discover more about his wonderful talent, his strength and what makes him tick, but it is never interesting to me to break the magic divide that naturally exists between the writer and the subject of an interview. So, I mention seeing a few articles about the accident online and I express how much joy is present in Martin in person, so much more than I ever expected from a survivor of war, essentially. That brings about memories of his colleague, “Tim” a man who in his short life made award winning, Oscar-nominated documentary films like Restrepo, created installations, contributed to best-selling magazines and curated books which made photojournalism “cool.”

“I knew Tim before what happened in Libya and there is one thing that people say that I think is so true with photography, and it’s “you should never meet your heroes.” I grew up fascinated by war photography and documentary photography and as I got older and into these situations, I met some of the people who inspired me in their work. And their work is still inspiring but as a person, I was like ‘I don’t want to be you’.” Martin continues, “but Tim was different. And the way that Tim, particularly in his work in Afghanistan with sleeping soldiers and what he’d began to do with his work in Libya, was this idea now that the battlefield is a performance, there was a performance aspect in it.”

In the car on our way to a fashion show inside the Sala Bianca, an iconic room inside the Palazzo Pitti where the “Made in Italy” concept began 55 years ago, Martin opens up further about this notion of war as a performance of sorts, which Hetherington had began to play with and which he himself is finding through his work. “Be it men trying to search for their role as men in war, who’d never picked up a gun and watched Rambo films to learn how to fire. Tim began to pick up on that, and I wasn’t maybe mature enough to pick up on that, but I saw what he saw and he just began to do it. And I’m so sad that he never got to carry on that. So in a way I kind of think I owe a lot to that experience, and to Tim and to trying to relay that performance, that study of young men, that study of humanity through many different stories.”

In Martin’s own work, a nearly indescribable quality is present, this wonderful kind of intimacy beyond all possible odds, and his work at Pitti Uomo is no exception. Male models bare chested backstage, a female model rushing back from the runway to change, even a young halberdier inside Palazzo Pitti at the Stefano Ricci show we watched together, the affinity Martin feels with the vulnerability of his subjects makes the person beholding his photographs feel like they are intruding on a private moment. During another car ride we share together, later in the day, he talks about how odd it is for him to be allowed so much access, particularly to women, backstage and up-close. “In the Middle East it’s a luxury to be able to capture a woman’s image,” Martin explains that he has to spend time convincing those around them that he’s worthy of that, and in Florence instead he’s been granted immediate access, no questions asked, to models who don’t even seem affected by his presence.

Inspired by Martin’s passion, I’ll admit that I started looking at the presentations as battles of sorts, the photographers’ pit became the trenches of these fashion wars, and the models started to appear more helpless, walking among the surly fashionistas hoping to gain approval. Everything took on a much more important tone with Martin around. It could be that he had earlier referred to the birth of his daughter as “a miracle” following his injuries. Or just the aura of being around someone who looks for the humanity in every situation.

I ask Martin what his Zen is, what gives him balance and he replies, “cooking and being in the water. I grew up on the beach surfing, before I was a photographer I was a surfer and represented Great Britain in the World Surfing Games when I was 16. I find such solace and relaxation in the surf, and bigger surf in particular. It’s an adrenalin thing.” When we touch briefly on life lessons, he says that from his experience he’s learned “not to say no to things,” and jokes that if he wasn’t at Pitti Uomo on this unusual assignment for him, “‘I’d probably be home doing my tax returns and would not have this week.”

The wildcard question, what I usually end an interview with is how a person would describe themselves, in three words, to someone who doesn’t know him. Martin chooses calmly, “I would say adventurous, human and honest.”

And I would like to add “a hero.”

High Fashion’s Excuse For Not Carrying Extended Sizes Is SO Tired

If you caught Aidy Bryant on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” Wednesday, you may have only stopped briefly to admire her Tanya Taylor dress for its sparkle and excellent design, because she was mostly dazzling us with a story about passing out in her apartment hallway after an “SNL” cast party.

You may not have thought there’d be reason to give the dress any thought at all.

But apparently, you’d be wrong. Glamour released “The Full Story Behind The Size 18 Dress Tanya Taylor Made For Aidy Bryant,” Thursday, in which the glossy explained that upon learning “no high fashion designer had ever offered to make ‘Saturday Night Live’ star Aidy Bryant a red-carpet dress in her size (18), Glamour asked New York-City designer Tanya Taylor to create a dress to wear at an upcoming event.”

It’s a beautiful dress, and Taylor is a fabulous designer ― her wares have been worn by the likes of Michelle Obama and Olivia Munn. This story is one we’ve heard before: an actress above a certain size reveals designers aren’t working with her, someone swoops in to create an amazing look, and we all celebrate said designer.

But there’s something awry about this scenario, and some others like it. Taylor, who actually does not design clothes above size 14, is being revered here for stepping up to the “challenge” of dressing a size 18 woman for a special occasion. And she says she refrains from broadening her typical size offerings because her retailers “only buy up to a size 12.”

If it’s even true that the retailers aren’t buying larger sizes, that notion hasn’t stopped, say, Christian Siriano from getting his label in stores above a size 14, which Glamour reports in the same story. It also contrasts starkly with numbers put out there from extended-size retailers like Eloquii, which Fashionista reported in 2016 saw a growth in volume of 165 percent in the previous year, with unconfirmed sales at $ 20 million.

In a piece for The Washington Post back in Sept. 2016, Tim Gunn echoed the sentiment of women who have ever tried shopping in a department store for something stylish, stating that shopping over a size 14 is “a horribly insulting and demoralizing experience,” despite the fact that an estimated 67 percent of women in the United States are plus-size.

Even Bryant said in the Glamour interview that she brings “at least six options” to any given photoshoot, recalling a shoot she did with co-stars Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong when she first got hired on “SNL” in which “there were just three things on my rolling rack ― each something like what an 80 year-old woman would wear to sing at a funeral. I was paralyzed.”

Taylor herself then, of course, is not the only problem. Plenty of designers have created dresses for celebrities in sizes they don’t carry. Brands are guilty of using models in sizes they don’t carry to sell clothes. But there is an issue in the constant blame game ― designers blaming retailers or money restraints for straying away from designing clothes in extended sizes. If a designer really wants to put their money (literally) where their mouth is, perhaps it’s time to consider the numbers listed above.

So, while we’re all about celebrating inclusivity, it feels a little wrong to celebrate a designer making one dress in a size 18 when she doesn’t currently ― and doesn’t appear to have plans to ― carry that size.

Lewis Black Blames Donald Trump For The Many Celebrity Deaths Of 2016

A whole host of celebrities died last year. And comedian Lewis Black is laying the blame firmly on President-elect Donald Trump

You want to know why so many celebrities died in 2016?” Black asked on Wednesday’s broadcast of “The Daily Show.” “It was to get out of playing the goddamn inauguration.”

Black made his dark one-liner whilst mocking Trump about his seeming inability to attract major stars to perform at his inauguration in Washington D.C. on Friday.

Black still plans to attend the event, however, “because I want to be there when Trump touches the Bible, and his hand catches on fire.”

Check out the full segment above.
